If that's why you find the joke funny, then it's not racist, or at least much less so (depending on the joke). However, there are also instances where such racist/bigoted jokes are funny because of how awful they are, or because society believes they're true. Enjoying racist jokes like that does make you racist, because it means you believe the racist stereotypes are true. In many cases, jokes are funny because they contain at least an element of truth. It kind of depends on the joke and why you enjoy it. My question to y'all: Does enjoying and/or telling racist jokes automatically make you a racist?
Long story short, we told him to go away and we carried on. He informed us that we were all 'ignorant bigots' and that telling racist jokes or even enjoying racist jokes makes you a racist. Naturally, a person (white male- atheist) working on homework in the same room did not approve of our jokes. One thing lead to another, and it turned into a competition of who could tell the most fucked up, sexist, morbid, racist, religious, joke. The general consensus for this particular group was that no such line exists. As in, where is each person's line that separates 'funny' from 'fucked up'.
In this group of people there were:Ī surprisingly diverse group given that my university is located in Texas.Īnyway, we got on the topic of what are the limits to each individual's sense of humor. Today at school I was hanging out in the physics lounge with a handful of my classmates.
